7 Interior Design Mistakes People Make | K102

You want your home to represent your style, but there are some basic design rules and guidelines that can help you achieve the look you want.

Start by avoiding one of these “seven deadly sins of decorating”:

  • Decorate for someone else’s lifestyle – Have you ever been in a house that had a luxurious room full of expensive furniture that was basically prohibited for everyday use? Some people have a room that looks like it was created for the life they imagine, not the life they have. Don’t be one of them.
  • Hanging artwork and decorations too high or too low – Many people hang artwork too high, but it should usually be hung at eye level. This also applies to TVs, they should be at eye level from the sofa or wherever you are sitting. That said, you also don’t want everything hanging at the same height.
  • Buy furniture and TVs that are too big or too small for the room – A huge TV is great, except when it’s in a very small living room. The same goes for a small sofa in a spacious den.
  • have too much clutter – Having candles, figurines or trinkets is one thing, but if your house is starting to look like a garage sale, it’s time to pack it up.
  • disregard security – Most of the mistakes on this list won’t hurt you and in the worst case, snobbish guests will think you have bad taste. But some things, like hanging curtains over a heating vent and not having smoke and CO2 detectors in your home, can be downright dangerous.
  • Don’t think about lighting – You don’t want your living room to look like an operating room, but you want to be able to see the people sitting in front of you, which means you need to have good lighting. Think about how to maximize natural light in the space and block it out when you want it, and make sure you have enough lamps and overhead lights.
  • Wallpaper the bathroom – Yeah, there are people here who do that, for some reason. But best to stick with small rugs that can be thrown in the washing machine because you know what’s going on in the bathroom.
