Ancient art with modern order and contemporary perspectives
For starters, the name “Plastic” itself is quite incomplete and confusing. The name was not taken from the synthetic substance but from the Greek word “plastikos”. The word itself means ‘to mold or sculpt’, reiterating the fact that this is a malleable branch. Being one of the oldest disciplines of surgery, as already indicated; but to this day, still, there has been no consensus on the name of the specialty that would fit into the various fields of work affecting all parts and regions of the human body. It is a distinctive specialty that does not have a name that defines it correctly. The argument to challenge the definition is that the different specialties are recognized either by their anatomical territory (Ear, Nose and Throat; Ophthalmology), the system involved (Urology, Nephrology, Neurology) or by age (such as Pediatric Surgery / Geriatrics ) and soon. However, plastic surgery is a unique discipline that is not limited to any particular region or system. Rather, it is based on some basic surgical principles. These are the root-level postulates for any surgery; however, are observed by plastic surgeons in particular. These guiding principles can be translated into any procedure, on any part / region of the body or organ system to achieve a positive result. This principle-based nature of the specialty qualifies it as a “problem-solving specialty”.
It caters for almost every part of the body from head to toe, treating every block of the body from skin to bones. Thus, the simplified argument of some citing plastic surgery as “skin surgery” is completely outdated. But still, the name doesn’t symbolize much to a layman and the medical community in general. The diversity of plastic surgery can be highlighted by the variety of procedures in which it is involved. Congenital malformations (cleft lip / palate, hand malformations, ear / nose malformations, moles and nevi, urogenital malformations), acute trauma, burns and burn reconstruction, cancer extirpations and reconstructions, reattachment of parts body amputations, post-traumatic defects on any part of the body, many cosmetic procedures like liposuction / lipofilling, facial rejuvenation, breast surgeries, sex reassignment procedures, hair transplant, to avoid quote that a little. Otherwise, the list seems endless. It is important to mention here that only one thing is that if someone needs a plastic surgery consultation or procedure, they should request a call from someone certified by the council. In this way, we can avoid any accidents at the hands of inexperienced people. It is also the duty of plastic surgeons as a community to educate the general public about its scope and field so that better services can be provided to those in need.
Nevertheless, many disciplines are increasingly encountering overlapping procedures with plastic surgery. Thus, at this time, Plastic Surgery was not always considered a main specialty for the procedures which were stereotyped as fundamental and consecrated to it. In such situations, we can call it the sharing of care, rather than opposing each other.
