Whigham plans a demolition derby
The Whigham Volunteer Community Council will be sponsoring its first-ever Demolition Derby this Saturday, March 19 at the Whigham Rattlesnake Roundup Grounds in Whigham. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the derby will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 each with children 10 and under $5 each. Food and drink will be available and kids ages 4-7 are encouraged to bring their PowerWheels and race between heats.
State Park Road boat ramp closed at Tired Creek Lake
The Grady County Board of Commissioners continues to make improvements to Tired Creek Lake and has announced that during these improvements the National Park Road to the lake and the main boat launch will be temporarily closed as the road that leads to the ramp is paved. The Cedar Springs East and West boat ramps remain open for those who wish to continue using the lake.
The new Third Thursday concert series kicks off this week
Downtown Cairo will launch a new series of concerts and events this week with an event-packed St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The weekend begins with the new ‘Third Thursday’ concert series featuring the Kenji Bolden Trio, who will perform in the open space where the old carousel used to be on South Broad Street from 6.30pm. In addition to music, there will be vendors selling food and drink in the carousel before and during the event. The fun continues throughout St. Patrick’s Day weekend with vendors offering ‘pop-up’ style shopping on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and a performance by local artist Baby Cee and a deejay on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a gospel concert on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Syrup Sisters fundraiser is March 24
Syrup Sisters of Cairo, formerly Pilot Club, hold their annual fundraiser and are currently selling tickets to a smoked pork chop dinner, cooked by Gary Jones. You can pick up the plaques on March 24 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church. Tickets are only $9 and are available by contacting Joan Cooper at (904) 777-0595. No plate will be sold on the day of the event without a ticket purchased in advance.
Whigham FFA Hosts Spring Plant Sale

Annual lunch for women in the labor market
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank of Cairo will be sponsoring the annual Women in the Workforce Luncheon on Tuesday, April 26 at Davis Park behind the Roddenbery Memorial Library. The event will include lunch, an inspirational speaker, and door prizes and tickets are $15 per person. For more information, call the Chamber of Commerce at 377-3663.
Deadline for tax exemptions
The Grady County Tax Assessors Office reminds all residents of the April 1 deadline to apply for Homestead Tax Exempt, Conservation, Preference or Forest Land Protection status. Detailed information on each of these exemptions can be obtained by visiting the Tax Assessors Office located at 114 1st Street, NE in Cairo.
Vintage car rally returns in May
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce has announced that the 34th Deep South Vintage Car Rally will return to Cairo from May 13-14. The car rally attracts vintage car enthusiasts and spectators from across the Southeastern United States and will include a gas parade, poker race and car show. More details will come soon from the Chamber of Commerce.
Library offering violin lessons
The Roddenbery Memorial Library invites anyone interested in learning to play the violin to join us in the library auditorium every Wednesday at 3.30pm for a beginners violin lesson. This is a free class sponsored by Grady County Fine Arts.
