The Naruto manga vs anime debate is strong for both sides, but which is better for new fans?

Whether it’s movies or TV shows, adapting a novel or a comic can be difficult. Some moments just don’t hit as hard in one midrange or the other, and sometimes the pacing can feel off after the jump. On top of that, more than a few series end up diverging wildly from the original source material.

But how do the Naruto manga and anime fit together? Here are the main differences between the two and the one worth discussing by fans of the series.

Naruto manga vs anime: what’s the difference?

The only difference between Naruto anime and Naruto manga is the overwhelming amount of filler in the anime.

The anime faithfully follows every story beat of the manga and takes very few liberties with major plot elements. The main difference is that it takes a lot longer to reach those story beats.

There are several complete filler seasons in the Naruto anime. On occasion, it adds to the overall story. For example, there is a pivotal moment in the first Naruto series where a character makes an important decision based on some brutal defeats he has suffered. The anime has a filler arc that further reinforces this by adding another blot to their record.

The problem is that a significant portion of the loadout doesn’t relate to the story at all and can be skipped by missing any character development or story progression. Looking strictly at Naruto Shippuden, fans rank nearly 200 of its 500 episodes as fillers.

Another important distinction is the artwork of the manga Naruto versus the animation of the anime Pierrot. Masashi Kishimoto’s artwork still holds up, though the end of the series has significantly less diverse character designs.

The animated version is a bit of the opposite, with less detailed animation for the early seasons that quickly ramps up in quality. Some of the early fights, especially Gaara and Rock Lee, still look great.

Is the Naruto anime better than the manga?

The Naruto manga is generally better than the anime. This is due to its greater focus on the important story elements and its more manageable length.

There are actually more Naruto anime episodes than manga chapters, but the story as a whole isn’t really developed in any meaningful way. That’s not to say there aren’t redeeming facets to the charge.

Naruto has a huge cast of characters and many of them come out unheralded. Many of them get more attention in the anime. If a manga character resonates but doesn’t get much attention, chances are there’s a filler episode or two about them.

The scenario of naruto emphasizes the importance of protecting comrades, never giving up and believing in hope. Many naruto characters embody these values while other characters represent the antithesis of these ideals. In a way, both sets of characters teach viewers lessons about those values.

RELATED: Top 10 Anime Characters Who Can Read Minds

Rock Lee proves that hard work trumps talent, Itachi teaches Kabuto self-recognition and how to believe in others, and Naruto shows the ninja world how to persist as he ascends the Hokage throne. However, naruto isn’t the only anime that teaches these lessons. Several other anime have characters who fulfill similar roles and whose ideals would easily join those of naruto.

ten Zenitsu illustrates what it means to be a Shinobi in Naruto

Although Zenitsu’s demon slayer often cries and cowers in fear, he finally remembers his grandfather’s encouragement to never give up. Zenitsu first tries to run away from the Spider Demons, but later decides to fight back and does his best to suppress the poison in his body after winning the battle. Also, Zenitsu cares about his comrades. After Tanjiro tells Zenitsu that the box Nezuko is in is precious to him, Zenitsu gives everything to protect Inosuke’s box. Zenitsu’s loyalty and determination would make him a great addition to narutoit is cast.

9 Kurapika’s Desire for Vengeance Resembles Naruto’s Villain Philosophies

Although Kurapika follows the path of revenge but remains a hero in Hunter X Hunterit fits the common pattern of how naruto the characters become villains. Innumerable naruto the villains start out as friendly people who later become obsessed with revenge, obstructing their vision of how to achieve peace in a world full of hate.

RELATED: The 10 Most Hated Naruto Villains, Ranked

Characters such as Nagato, Obito, and Sasuke lose faith in the world and sink deeper into darkness as they figure out what peace means to them. As the last survivor of the Kurta clan, Kurapika has a similar story.

8 Chopper can sympathize with Jinchuriki

chopper in A play can sympathize with Jinchuriki in naruto because he understands what it’s like to be a foreigner. Wherever the Jinchuriki go, others shun them because they possess powerful beasts, which makes them feel like outsiders. Likewise, because humans treat Chopper like a deer and deer treat him like a human, Chopper has a hard time fitting in with anyone. Nonetheless, he perseveres through the struggles to be different like Naruto and the other Jinchuriki do, and would prove their worthy friend and loyal companion.

seven Genos works harder than anyone to become a powerful hero

Genos in One-punch man has a work ethic comparable to that of Rock Lee. Both Lee and Genos rely on drive rather than drive to improve their skills and won’t let anything distract them from achieving their goals. Because Genos dedicates his life to becoming stronger, he moves in with Saitama, meticulously analyzes everything Saitama does and says. He even goes so far as to keep a notebook handy to record new tips. Genos personifies the value of hard work and would therefore fit in well with narutoMessaging.

6 Giyu Tomioka follows his heart

Giyu of demon slayer is not afraid to break the rules to follow what he believes to be the right course of action. He shares this quality with Itachi Uchiha, who massacres his clan to preserve the peace even though he knows he will become a criminal who cannot stay in the Leaf Village.

RELATED: 10 Worst Trends In Shonen Anime, Ranked

Likewise, despite having a duty to kill demons, Giyu allows Nezuko to live and sends Tanjiro to train under the tutelage of Sakonji Urokodaki. Giyu’s willingness to sacrifice himself for others makes him a good fit for the world of naruto.

5 Biscuit Krueger would be an excellent Sensei

Krueger cookie Hunter X Hunter trains Gon and Killua to harness their Nen abilities to enhance their strength and knowledge, proving that she can also train students in naruto for Chunin exams. With many years of experience, she knows the ins and outs of how to properly develop students. Thus, Krueger could play a role similar to that of Kakashi, the leader of Team Seven. By pushing his students to learn how to grow the hard way and employing rigorous training regimens, Krueger would have his students ready for anything.

4 Nico Robin sacrifices himself for his comrades

Nico Robin demonstrates how much she will protect her friends in the Water Seven arc of A play. She goes to the government to allow the Straw Hat crew to safely escape the island and avoid a Buster Call. One of the fundamental lessons Kakashi teaches Team Seven is to never let anyone threaten those who are precious to him. Robin embodies this lesson better than most anime characters with her selfless spirit, as she prioritizes her friends’ lives over her own.

3 Mikasa Ackerman protects those who are precious to her

The attack of the TitansMikasa Ackerman embodies everything a ninja should be. She’s calm under pressure, gets the job done, and most importantly, fights not only to slay the titans, but also to protect those dear to her, like Eren Yeager. Mikasa cherishes the bonds people share as much as Naruto does, and others know they can count on her to complete missions with an emphasis on teamwork and caring for her comrades. As a prodigal and caring person, Mikasa would be a respectable and high-ranking ninja in naruto.

2 Garo powers up similarly to the Uchiha

One-punch manGaro’s shows reveal that he is similar to the Uchiha Clan members in his fight against Genos, Bang, and Bomb. Members of the Uchiha clan have a reputation for becoming stronger when they experience intense emotions.

RELATED: 10 Characters Who Deserve A Better Story In One-Punch Man

For example, Sasuke’s chakra becomes thicker and colder due to his anger at the top of the Kage. Throughout the arc, her powers such as the Susano’o evolve. Likewise, when Garo remembers the pain he felt as a child, he suddenly becomes more powerful despite the injuries he may have.

1 Eren Yeager doesn’t let anyone get in his way

Eren Yeager from The attack of the Titans has the tenacity to pursue his goals no matter the obstacles that stand in his way. His determination inspires others around him to be the best versions of themselves and never give up, just like Naruto does throughout his journeys as a ninja. Even as children, Naruto and Eren never show fear and are quick to protect others. For example, Naruto fights against Orochimaru in the Forest of Death and Eren saves Mikasa from the people who killed his parents.

Few in the Western art market had heard of Huang Yuxing until mid-2020, when one of his fluorescent-hued paintings fetched $1 million at Christie’s Hong Kong. Once a young artist gets an award like this, it doesn’t take long for international players to start paying attention.

Over the past year and a half, the Beijing-born artist has gained global gallery representation and set several new auction records. In December, his Seven Treasure Pins (2016-2019) grossed $8.3 million, beating its previous record by 424% and beating its high estimate by a factor of 13. Huang’s work brought in more money at auction last year than top notch names like Nicolas Party and Jonas. Wood, according to the Artnet News Pro Intelligence report.

The surge in prices for his paintings, which fashionably mix figuration, abstraction and landscape, coincides with what could be a rebound in contemporary Chinese art more broadly.

The return of the Chinese contemporary

While the rise of young Chinese collectors has been a major narrative in the market in recent years, Chinese contemporary art has been slower to rebound from the Great Recession that hit in 2015, just after Chinese President Xi Jinping. extensive anti-corruption crackdown sent a number of senior officials to prison.

That tide changed last year when millennial collectors began spending increased sums on young Chinese and foreign artists. Sales of ultra-contemporary Chinese art, defined as the work of artists of Chinese descent born after 1974, nearly doubled to $96.1 million from $49 million a year earlier, according to the database. of Artnet price data.

Between 2019 and 2021, sales for the category jumped nearly 240%. The new bump is mainly driven by demand from painters like Huang, Jia Aili (b. 1979), Zhao Zhao (born in 1982) and Liang Yuanwei (born in 1977).

“The contemporary art market is fueled by a young generation bringing in energy and new money,” veteran art dealer Pascal de Sarthe told Artnet News. “In recent years, the art market has developed on all fronts and has gone beyond art for art’s sake. It is more than ever an asset and a form of investment. It adds an element that hasn’t been scaled up until the last decade or so, and everyone in the contemporary art world is enjoying the journey.

In November, Phillips Hong Kong launched a new series called “Ultra/Neo”, dedicated to a generation of Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian artists, largely born in the 1970s, whose work comments the rapid technological and cultural developments they witness. All 30 lots, offered in the daytime and evening sales in association with Poly Auction, sold, some for well above the estimate. Six set new artist records.

Nevertheless, amid the economic uncertainties triggered by the superimposition of geopolitical crises, some are wondering if this segment of the market, which has proven to be volatile before, has any real resilience. In a market increasingly manipulated by speculation, do artists like Huang, whose prices have skyrocketed, have roots deep enough to weather an impending storm?

The Rise of Huang Yuxing

Born in Beijing, Huang graduated from the mural painting department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), China’s leading art academy, in 2000.

In the years after graduation, Huang’s works appeared in various group exhibitions, with paintings often depicting Japanese anime characters like Astro Boy. They gained traction in local auctions, but as the market lost interest in anime paintings around 2009, Huang lost his edge.

A long trip to the Himalayas in late 2009 set him on a new path, according to Chinese media. This new focus on landscape brought him solo exhibition opportunities, including a 2014 exhibition with Antenna Space in Shanghai.

Huang’s big break came the following year. He had a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, became the first guest artist at the Yuz Museum Project Room, and began to develop a modest aftermarket presence with total sales of $323,917. After dealer Johann König encountered her work at Art Basel Hong Kong, he offered her a solo exhibition in London in 2019. It sold for prices ranging from $20,000 to $100,000.

Meanwhile, steam resumed auctions. In the year of the König show, his work grossed $1.6 million. This figure increased nearly sixfold in 2020 and increased again in 2021 with $19.9 million in sales. The Average Huang fetched $326,816 at auction that year, more than his cumulative work in 2015. At Christie’s Hong Kong on May 27, Huang’s Ravine of cherry blossoms (2019) grossed over HK$6.9 million ($883,177), almost 10 times expectations.

What is the draw?

Huang’s contemporary take on the landscape – the subject of traditional Chinese ink paintings for centuries – helped him develop a dedicated Chinese collector base. In recent years, his admirers have grown to include Western collectors and institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami.

“Collectors who are perhaps largely millennials or even Gen Z are very attached to this color scheme as it harkens back to the Y2K aesthetic which is very distinctive and inspired by the mid 90s and early 90s. 2000,” said Danielle So, head of contemporary art sales at Phillips Hong Kong.

Huang’s star status was confirmed when Louis Vuitton showcased his work on his Capucines handbag last year, putting him in the ranks of Vik Muniz, Zeng Fanzhi and Paola Pivi. “The bag will accompany different conversations and daily activities, rather than just remaining static in an exhibition,” the artist told media at the time.

The starmaking gallery Almine Rech began representing Huang in 2020, before presenting a sold-out exhibition of his work in Brussels. In an effort to expand his collector base, Rech said he sold all 21 works to American and European collections. “Its well-executed details and impressive use of color set it apart from its peers,” said Eileen Wang, gallery director in Shanghai.

Notice of reversal?

In the booming contemporary art market, surging sales may seem like a warning: if collectors buy an artist’s work at inflated prices, they could give up and cash in, while financialization can discourage curators and others who might help ensure the longevity of this artist’s career. Some observers fear that Huang, along with other rising young artists, may fall victim to this cycle.

“Being caught in a speculative market is an artist’s worst nightmare,” warned de Sarthe, citing a previous boom in the contemporary art market in the late 1980s that “left so many victims behind.” The dynamic hurts the collector who has paid too much too. “The real problem is that very few collectors currently buy art with their eyes. Most of them just follow trends,” said de Sarthe.

Today The market is “most comfortable” with paintings with detailed brushstrokes and intense colors that put a contemporary spin on traditional styles like surrealism or abstraction, observed de Sarthe. “The bad news is that, in some cases, growth can leave the artist with little room for error as they reach record prices in their first year of success,” he said. .

There are already signs of unsubscribing. Huang’s top 20 auction lots were all sold in 2020 or later. Fourteen are recent works, having been created in 2015 or later; four of those 14 were completed in 2019. (This includes his record Seven Treasure Pins and White building in the forestwhich was acquired by a European collector at the 2019 London König fair and sold for $497,782 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in April.)

The rapid turnaround has caught the attention of some art advisers who, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the return of works to the market in less than five years is a warning sign. Two of Huang’s top 20 lots represent repeat sales, having been bought at auction in 2018 and 2019 and resold in 2021.

But market participants invested in Huang’s success take a different view and say they are working to rein in his runaway market. Almine Rech has put in place a five-year non-resale agreement for the artist’s new work ahead of his first solo exhibition in New York later this year. The new primary market prices are yet to be confirmed.

Ada Tsui, Head of Today’s Sale of Christie’s 20th and 21st Century Asia-Pacific Art Department, described Seven Treasure Pins as “an exceptional case” and said that “Huang’s labor market has become stable”. Phillips’ So agreed that the $8.3 million record should stay in place for some time.

But with his growing exposure in the West, demand for Huang’s colorful paintings is unlikely to die out anytime soon. The waiting list for his new work is long and many collectors have been lining up for nearly two years already, said Wang of Almine Rech.

The artist “can hardly be called prolific,” she noted. “Sometimes he spends six months traveling without working. Sometimes he stays in his studio all day to create with passion.

To be a fan of Huang, it seems that patience and a big wallet are essential.

the naruto The series is vast and there are a ton of characters that have been introduced over the course of the series. While some of the characters experienced a steady rate of growth, some of them got sidelined or eventually lost their charm.

There are a number of reasons for a character’s popularity to drop, but one of the most common reasons it happens is lack of screen time. Let’s take a look at some of the characters who lost their charm over the course of the series.

Some of the characters from naruto which has lost its charm

1) Rock Lee

Rock Lee from the Naruto series (Image via Pierrot)
Rock Lee from the Naruto series (Image via Pierrot)

Rock Lee was a popular character in naruto who trained in taijutsu under the tutelage of Might Guy. Considering how the series progressed, fans expected Rock Lee to be as strong as Might Guy since he was Might Guy’s favorite student and showed flashes of genius from time to time. However, at the time Boruto began, Rock Lee didn’t quite get the screen time he might have enjoyed, considering he was portrayed as someone as strong and influential as Might Guy. While fans believe he is capable of opening all eight gates, there are no feats to suggest so at this time.

2) Neji

When Neji was first introduced as a character in naruto, many fans thought he would be someone who could rival Naruto and Sasuke towards the end of the series. However, he didn’t really receive much screen time and didn’t enjoy a level of character development comparable to deuteragonists such as Sakura. Neji’s death was used by Kishimoto to catalyze Hinata and Naruto’s relationship, which was not the ending fans expected for a character of his caliber. Neji’s charm slowly waned due to these reasons, which could have been avoided as he was a great character with a lot of potential for character development.

3) Tents

Tenten is a popular character for the wrong reasons. She’s a bit of a meme among the community and quite often ignored by writers. Given her fighting style, she’s an interesting character on paper as the series lacked weapon experts who could wield a variety of weapons depending on the situation. She was someone who also had a level of versatility that few had in the beginning solely due to the range she covered with her attacks. She was able to use swords for close combat and long-range projectiles to fight characters from a distance. However, she was passed over by the writers and not given much screen time. She also didn’t grow much in her character development, which led to her popularity and charm on the show declining.

4) Anko

Anko as a character was quite mysterious and naruto fans knew she was related to Orochimaru in the past. She was quite strong and a capable shinobi who aided several shinobi, including the protagonist, on missions. The series continued to provide a buildup for this character and fans assumed it would include a fight after learning the truth as well. She was happy after locating the lab because she realized he hadn’t abandoned her and she left him because of his devious plans. While the ending was happy, the payoff was unsatisfactory, and this character also lost her charm. This character seemed quite unsuited to the Boruto series as well, which certainly led to the decline in popularity of this character.

5) Shizune

Shizune was a character that was introduced during the early parts of the naruto series. She helped Tsunade with her administrative work and all the tasks she had to do during her tenure as Hokage. Fans expected Shizune to be a strong and capable shinobi ever since she was appointed by the Hokage to help with his duties. However, this character hasn’t really had the opportunity to engage in combat or play a significant role during difficult situations that would have indicated the abilities and traits of a well-written character. Naturally, this character lost its charm and its popularity gradually declined towards the end of the series.

6) Kiba

Kiba was a character introduced at the start of the naruto series and was on the same team as Hinata and Shino. Kiba worked quite hard and he saw the protagonist as someone he wanted to compete with. When a character harbors this sentiment, the fanbase usually expects such a character to become as strong or comparable to the protagonist after a few practice arcs. However, Kiba didn’t really grow as a character or as a shinobi. This character’s popularity declined at a steady rate and became moot after a while in the series.

7) Shino

Shino Aburame was a character whose introduction raised a lot of eyebrows as he had a unique fighting style. He used bugs in battle and the reason fans loved this character was because his abilities would complement all aspects of being a shinobi. It was great for combat, had very good recon utilities, and was also used for scavenging items. However, Shino hasn’t really had much character development over the course of Shippuden and his popularity declined. However, he became an instructor at the academy of Boruto series.

8) Yamato

Yamato, during the first parts of naruto, replaced Kakashi as team leader of Team 7. He was asked to lead the team as he had Hashirama’s cells and therefore could contain the Nine-Tailed Beast’s chakra if he became uncontrollable. He used Wood Release and when he first did it, the series caught the attention of all the fans. However, Yamato hasn’t really had much screen time after a point since being captured by Kabuto. He was locked inside Tobi’s body and later taken into the Infinite Tsukuyomi shortly after being released. Since that was the case, Yamato lost its charm and its popularity also declined.

dragonball begins with the humble adventure of young Goku as he meets new friends and gains strong skills on his unexpected path to power. Goku has aged and become more dangerous, but his desire to protect the planet and the people he loves is never in question. Goku has made some important friends over the years, and Piccolo is a stoic and honorable Namekian who enters the series as Goku’s rival.

RELATED: Dragon Ball: Piccolo’s Best Fight In Every Arc (In The Original Series)

Piccolo’s transition into a hero and one of Goku’s most trusted allies is nothing short of amazing because of how far he’s come. Piccolo usually acts as a mentor or stern observer, but there are rare times when Piccolo’s more silly side comes out and he expresses humility or embarrassment.

9 He’s often stuck with childcare responsibilities

Piccolo is propelled into the world of dragonball as a strange conduit of revenge who is meant to carry on his father’s legacy of destruction. Piccolo serves as a villain for a substantial arc in the original dragonball before his priorities begin to align with those of Goku and the rest of Earth’s heroes.

Piccolo is an ally, but many would still consider him a gruff and intimidating presence. As a result, it’s a major shock that Piccolo appears to be the dragonball character who is most often tasked with babysitting duty. It’s one thing for Piccolo to take Gohan under his wing for rigorous training in the wilderness, but there’s no reason why Piccolo needs to play house with Goten and Trunks or be responsible for a baby Pan.

8 He tries driving school

Dragon Ball Z is heavy on anime-only filler material, the majority of which has mixed reception within the fandom. The filler can go in all sorts of directions and one of the most comical examples involves Goku and Piccolo struggling through driving school in an effort to get their license.

These characters can fly much faster than any car, but Chi-Chi pushes these two to pay their dues. Piccolo’s aloof behavior at driving school is bizarre, but the “casual” outfit he wears is even more surprising. It makes sense for Goku to jump through those hoops for Chi-Chi, but Piccolo is much less beholden to his demands.

7 He shops and does chores for Chi-Chi

One of the sweetest aspects of dragonball This is how Piccolo became an unofficial member of Goku’s family, and he built a unique and special relationship with each member of the group. Piccolo has such a deep history with Goku and Gohan, but Chi-Chi remained more of a fleeting presence in his life.

RELATED: Dragon Ball: 10 Basic Mistakes Piccolo Keeps Making

Nonetheless, Chi-Chi seems to have an unusual hold on Piccolo, where he becomes submissive and docile. Piccolo goes shopping with Chi-Chi and helps her with her chores. He is literally left to do the heavy lifting. Chi-Chi claims that it’s only fair since she’s providing Piccolo with free room and board, but he doesn’t have to be so soft about it.

6 He disapproves of Trunks’ love life

Piccolo carries such a different energy than the rest of the characters in dragonball that there is an added novelty in his reactions to the ordinary parts of life. For example, Piccolo doesn’t have much of a dating history or first-hand experience with romance, but he’s not shy about making startling criticisms of young Trunks’ habits.

In battle of the gods, Piccolo worries about Trunks’ friendship with young Mai and says such actions at that age will only lead to trouble. Everyone is shocked when Piccolo looks into this case, but the connection between Trunks and Mai is also completely innocent.

5 He cringes at Gohan and Videl’s wedding photo

Piccolo left a big mark on Gohan’s life, so it’s always nice to see that appreciation is reciprocated and that Gohan opens up to Piccolo. Piccolo sometimes struggles with public displays of emotion, but it turns out he was proudly present at Gohan and Videl’s wedding.

Gohan shares a photo from that engagement with Piccolo, which shows everyone dressed in formal attire except for Piccolo, who also blinked at the worst moment. Piccolo shudders at this photo and how his clumsy energy disrupts the otherwise happy display.

4 Gardening is his pleasure

dragonball generally focuses on its characters while they’re lost in preparation for battle, but the few downtimes shine a light on Goku’s simpler life as a farmer. Goku’s family has a lot of land that is full of crops, but Goku finds excuses to avoid these laborious tasks.

RELATED: Dragon Ball: 10 Harsh Realities Of Being Piccolo

Piccolo has even less reason to spend his days pulling weeds and tending to yard work, but Dragon Ball Super shows that even he is not immune to Chi-Chi’s demands. Piccolo looks almost shocked that he agreed to help with such remedial tasks, and yet his hands are filled with fodder.

3 He dresses Gohan with his clothing department

Piccolo becomes a surrogate father figure to Gohan following Goku’s passing, and much of their bond is forged together in the desert during arduous preparation for the incoming Saiyan invasion. Piccolo watches Gohan from afar and makes sure he’s never in real danger, but he doesn’t let go of his tough loving attitude towards his student.

One of the weirdest moments in their training involves Piccolo creating new clothes for Gohan using his mysterious Namekian abilities. It’s such a different use of Piccolo’s powers, and it doesn’t seem like a skill he would take the time to learn.

2 It becomes a clunky live demonstration of fusion principles

Love it or hate it, fusion has become a fundamental component of dragonball, and most of the biggest battles in the series turn to this process, even if it ultimately fails. The grandest fusion shows are those that involve Goku and Vegeta, but before they steal the show, it’s Goten and Trunks who are seen as ideal candidates for the fusion dance.

The fusion dance is not that complicated, but precision is a must and it’s still a series of moves that need to be learned. Piccolo somehow becomes responsible for showing Goten and Trunks the basic moves behind this dance, which he is extremely embarrassed to perform in front of an audience.

1 He stays in hell to be his new guardian

Dragon Ball GT still has its share of detractors, and it takes big risks for the franchise, some of which pay off better than others. Piccolo isn’t the only individual to make strange decisions that insult his development, but his character comes off on a particularly disappointing note.

Super 17’s attack is based on a gateway between Hell and Earth opening up and releasing hordes of bad guys. Piccolo ultimately chooses to stay in Hell to ensure such a disaster never happens again. This move is in service of Goku’s freedom, but it’s an impulsive decision on his part.

Since February 2015, black clover has since gone on to become one of the biggest anime/manga franchises, with millions of fans worldwide. A lot of that likely stems from how it reminds viewers of older shows they loved too, while still managing to stand out as an original concept. Among the oldest series, the main ones are the “Big Three”, namely, naruto, Bleach and A piece.

Although some similarities to these shows have led viewers to see them as purely derivative of what came before them, this interpretation seemingly ignores all the ways in which black clover separated from its iconic predecessors. Inspiration from older shows can be pretty obvious, but thankfully it never crosses the line by constantly taking the story and characters in different directions. It was this mix of familiar and new ideas and twists on old ones that hooked viewers and made black clover a worthy successor to the Big Three as a whole.

RELATED: Black Clover: What’s Next After The Spade Kingdom Raid Arc?

Starting from the most obvious inspiration, it is not difficult to see the resemblance between black clover and naruto. Both feature a rowdy young protagonist with a black-haired rival brimming with talent. There’s even a monster that dwells within the main character that starts out evil but befriends him in the end.

First and foremost, the rivalry between Asta and Yuno is infinitely healthier than the rather toxic one found between Naruto and Sasuke. Unlike this last series, there is no hatred or animosity between Asta and Yuno, only love and respect. The two characters actively build each other up and act as an inspiration as opposed to the insecurity-laden rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke.

Another thing to highlight is the female cast of black clover. Not only are many of the characters featured in the show female, but they are generally portrayed as strong and powerful characters. This is especially true with Noelle Silva, who acts as the series’ main female protagonist, much like Sakura Haruno did in naruto. However, unlike Sakura, Noelle develops into a truly powerful and interesting character. Even at first, when she’s portrayed as relatively weak, it’s only because she doesn’t yet know how to control her massive, overwhelming magic. In reality, black clover arguably subverts the common trope by having the protagonist have absolutely no magical powers while her female counterpart has more than she can control.

Get away from naruto, Bleach would likely be the next closest member of the Big Three to compare black clover for. While throwing crazy twists with his villains is straight out of Bleach, Asta’s relationship with his devil Liebe is also reminiscent of Ichigo’s relationship with his Zanpakuto. Not only do they each empower their respective protagonists with swords that can emit dark power, but even their early dynamics are similar.

RELATED: Black Clover: The Magic Knights Defeated Lucifero – But Is He Really Over?

Early versions of Zangetsu and Liebe are somewhat antagonistic, threatening Ichigo and Asta respectively with an attempt to take over their bodies. Although the threats are real either way, they still choose to support and empower the protagonists and ultimately befriend them after Ichigo and Asta suffer a crushing defeat and gain insight into their origins and of their powers. The process is pretty much the same for both, but because that’s where most of the similarities lie, black clover successfully avoids being spin-off and instead offers a different take on its predecessor.

If there’s one thing that black clover integrity of A piece, it’s the amazing supporting cast. From the beginning, the Straw Hat Pirates have been considered by many to be the ultimate anime/manga team. It’s not necessarily down to strength, but rather the quality of each character and their dynamic with each other, which makes them feel like a real family. Each character has a story and develops as the story itself progresses, which makes them important to the overall story, which is exactly what black clover managed to do with the Black Bulls.

RELATED: Black Clover Takes a Break to Prepare for the Series Finale

The Black Bulls also feel like family. This is a magical guild made up of outcasts who would lay down their lives for each other. Many story arcs are dedicated or feature moments that push not only Asta but also the rest of the Black Bulls forward. It’s not like in Bleach, where only the main character gets stronger. In black cloverall Black Bulls matter, just like in A piece. While there’s a pretty big similarity between the two, that’s largely where the similarities end – which is definitely for the best, because by just incorporating family dynamics, black cloverThe characters and the plot remain totally original.

It is true that black clover shares a lot with the Big Three, but it’s important to see how different he is from them as well. Although there are many ways to black clover can be considered derived, it is only at a superficial glance. Audiences watching closely are treated to a wonderful series with a great plot, awesome fights, and lovable characters. black clover takes the best of what came before it and manages to incorporate it into a largely original package that just keeps getting better as the story progresses.
