demon slayer Season 2 ends with another opening in the Hashira ranks, this time due to Tengen Uzui’s retirement. The Sound Hashira suffers some pretty serious injuries during his fight with the Upper Moon 6 Demons Daki and Gyutaro. Although Nezuko uses her Blood Demon Art to cure him of Gyutaro’s poison, Tengen leaves the battle without an eye and a hand.
When the Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro, arrives in the red light district, Tengen announces his intention to leave the elite group of Demon Slayers. And with Kyojuro Rengoku’s death during the anime’s Mugen Train arc, this marks the Hashira’s second departure in a very short time.
Could Tanjiro and his friends come and fill these openings in future seasons of demon slayer?

Obanai isn’t thrilled to learn of Tengen’s retreat, lamenting that there are now two openings among the Hashira – a worrying prospect for anyone counting on the Demon Slayer Corps to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji.
Still, Tengen remains optimistic about Obanai’s concern. He points to Tanjiro as someone who could eventually join the group. After all, the anime’s lead survived an encounter with a higher-ranking demon. This already places him miles ahead of his peers.
And after Inosuke’s recitation of the various ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps, ascending seems like the natural progression for Tanjiro and his friends. They have a long way to go before they claim the same level of power as characters like Tengen and Rengoku. But if they can overcome the obstacles in their path, they will follow in the footsteps of their mentors.
Tanjiro has obstacles to overcome before becoming Hashira
demon slayer teased Tanjiro becoming a Hashira in his finale, but it also highlighted an obstacle for him. Along with increasing his strength and stamina, Tanjiro will need to work on his relationships with other Hashira. Those who watched Season 1 will remember that they didn’t start off on the right foot. Many members of the group disapprove of his decision to let Nezuko live.
And Obanai’s reaction to Tengen’s words suggests that he will try to stop Tanjiro from joining the group. Hopefully the series leader can convince fellow Rengoku and Tengen of his worth – perhaps by taking on more missions.
All episodes of demon slayer‘s Entertainment District Arc is streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu.
