Grace Johnson visits local booksellers, shares her experiences and shares a bit about each store. This concludes the print series, but visit doorcountypulse.com/literature to learn more about the other six featured stores.

Opening year: 2018
Site: 41 N. 3rd Ave. in Sturgeon Bay
The owners:
David and Margaret Magle

If you don’t know it’s there, you may accidentally walk through the entrance to OtherWorlds Books & More. Tucked away in the Park Place Mall on 3rd Avenue, OtherWorld spans three venues filled with new and used titles, and more. Yes, Three rooms. This is probably the largest bookstore on this tour.

OtherWorlds takes advantage of all available space, so there are libraries everywhere, creating a sort of maze to explore. My first stop was in the expansive sci-fi and fantasy section, for which David informed me they had a shipment of over 500 pounds yet to be sorted.

The first room is mainly reserved for books, but there is also a selection of vinyls in a corner. Continuing on, the second room offers a plethora of games, puzzles, and collectible cards. The last room houses a whole collection of comics and a few collectible figurines. If you don’t know where to start, just ask to be pointed in the right direction!

The beginning

OtherWorlds started out simple, with David and Margaret’s love and passion for the written word, as well as their desire to share something that was an important part of their lives. Although they still planned to open a bookstore, the closure of Book World pushed their plans forward by several months.

Store specialties

Les Magles considers one of their specialties to be “the other” in the name of their store. In addition to books, they sell puzzles, games, and more. Their common interest in science fiction / fantasy also shines through with an excellent selection of new and old titles.

One area that I find exceptional is their comic book collection. You won’t find a selection like this anywhere else in Door County. (Steve Grutzmacher, the Pulse Peninsula ‘The comic book guru can attest to the impressive collection.) According to the OtherWorlds website, the store stocks over 150 new titles, as well as over 17,000 old comics dating back 50 years.

Bookstores and the community

“As our name symbolizes, when you read a book – whether it’s fantasy, sci-fi, political thriller or steamy romance set in Victorian England – you withdraw from this world and reside elsewhere. , if only for a short time. ” said Marguerite. “Bookstores offer education and current events, entertainment and getaways. Bookstores are life. Vincent Van Gogh said: “Bookstores always remind me that there are good things in this world.”
