After years of development, the live-action debut of the popular DC comic book series The sand man is finally coming to Netflix soon. Fans around the world have been waiting for years for the right adaptation of author Neil Gaiman’s dark fantasy comic series. As part of the Netflix TUDUM Weekend Fan Event, we’re now one step closer to the show’s debut. Netflix has just released the first images of the streamer’s upcoming live-action series. The sand man is an upcoming American streaming drama television series based on the comic book series of the same name. The upcoming series is being developed by Allan Heinberg, alongside Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer as executive producers. The sand man is produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. The sand man tells the story of Dream, the holder Sandman. The upcoming series has an impressive cast which stars Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar.
The official synopsis of The sand man reads, A wizard attempting to capture death to negotiate eternal life traps his younger brother Dream instead. Fearing for his safety, the wizard kept him imprisoned in a glass bottle for decades. After his escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, sets out in search of his lost power items. According to Neil Gaiman, the plan is to faithfully adapt the series, starting with the adaptation of the first season. Preludes & Nocturnes and The doll house. However, the upcoming series already features a few changes to update the story for modern times. For example, one of those changes includes the series set in 2021 rather than 1989, with Dream now jailed for 105 years instead of 75 years.
Adaptation efforts The sand man filming began in 1991, which waded through developmental hell for many years. In 2013, David S. Goyer presented a film adaptation of the series to Warner Bros. with David S. Goyer and Neil Gaiman scheduled to produce alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was originally scheduled to star and possibly direct. However, Gordon-Levitt came out on Creative Differences later in 2016. Due to the film’s extended development, Warner Bros. focused on a TV series. Netflix then signed an agreement to produce the series in June 2019, with filming from October 2020 through August 2021.

The original comic book series The sand man ran for a total of 75 issues from January 1989 to March 1996. Critically acclaimed, The sand man was one of the first graphic novels to appear The New York Times List of the best sellers. Filming wrapped up in August, and while there is no confirmed release date yet, The sand man is slated to debut on Netflix in late 2021.
